Burnaby Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massages reach the deepest layers of your muscles and connective tissues to help relieve chronic muscle problems as well as heal injuries and is ideal for athletes and others who place strenuous demands on their bodies. It involves applying sustained pressure and slow and deep strokes to help reduce tension and break up scar tissue that forms in muscle and tissue following injury. It is a bit more uncomfortable than a relaxation massage, less rhythmic and more active and intensive, however, it promotes faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.
At ELU Wellness all our deep tissue massage therapy sessions are conducted by a Registered Massage Therapist or RMT enumerated by the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC).
Like any massage at Elu Wellness a deep tissue massage also begins with light pressure to warm up the muscles and also involves the use of the palms and fingers as well as elbows and forearms to manipulate tissues, however, the pressure is gradually increased from light to firm and then deep. Unlike a relaxation massage which is used mainly to promote relaxation and healing through reducing muscle tension cause by everyday activities, a deep tissue massage is meant to help treat conditions and injuries.
Chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis, plantar fasciitis and fibromyalgia can be eased through deep tissue massage as can pain caused by tight tissue clusters. As a deep tissue massage helps break up scar tissue by improving lymphatic circulation and drainage, which in turn helps improve flexibility and range of motion for more fluid movement, oftentimes deep tissue massages are also encouraged for those recovering from surgery in order to minimize scar tissue. A deep tissue massage can also help stretch injured or twisted muscles and help facilitate the movement of toxins in order to speed up recovery.
Though a relaxation massage is the basis for many deep tissue massage techniques and though the two therapies share many similarities, a relaxation message only targets the superficial layers of muscles and focuses on the parts of your body that tend to hold the most tension, such as the neck, shoulders and back. A deep tissue massage, on the other hand, delves quite deep and can be slightly uncomfortable at times, especially when the therapist is working on a knot in the muscle, however, a deep tissue massage should not be painful.
If at any time during your massage at ELU Wellness you feel discomfort, please speak up and your RMT will make adjustments to ensure you are as much at ease as possible.
Massage therapy is a clinically-oriented healthcare option that helps alleviate musculoskeletal disorders associated with every day occupational stress, muscular over-use as well as other acute and chronic pain conditions. Both relaxation and deep tissue massage are used to help elevate pain, manage health conditions, promote healing and enhance wellness.
